PC Optimum vs Scene+ vs Aeroplan: which program earns the most?

2026-02-14

The real value of a point

PC Optimum and Scene+ are nearly identical: 10,000 points = $10 at PC (0.1¢/pt nominally, but bonus offers change everything) and 100 points = $1 at Scene+ (1¢/pt). Aeroplan plays in another league: its points average ~1.4¢ each — but only when redeemed for flights.

The classic trap: earning Aeroplan points then redeeming them for gift cards or merchandise, where they're often worth under 0.8¢. A point is only worth what you actually get for it.

Where do you actually earn?

PC Optimum wins the Quebec grocery game: Provigo, Maxi, Pharmaprix (Shoppers), plus Esso/Mobil. Scene+ covers IGA, Sobeys, Safeway, FreshCo — plus Cineplex, Home Hardware and Expedia. If your grocery store is Metro or Super C, the moi program is the alternative to consider.

Aeroplan accumulates mostly through credit cards and Air Canada flights — not groceries. It's a travel program, period.

Redemption ease and gotchas

PC Optimum requires 10,000-point increments — no spending $5 here and there. Scene+ is more flexible ($1 increments). Aeroplan has no value floor: a listed flight can cost more points one day than the next.

The real multiplier is the companion credit card: PC World Elite, Scotia Momentum or Aeroplan cards can double or triple your earn rate. Compare them in our cards section.

Verdict

Groceries at Loblaw/Shoppers in Quebec? PC Optimum, no contest. At IGA/Sobeys with movies on top? Scene+. Travel at least once a year? Aeroplan beats everything — as long as you redeem for flights. And nothing stops you from combining two: groceries + travel.
