How to switch home internet providers in Quebec (stress-free)
2026-10-11
Before cancelling: check your contract
In Canada, most internet plans are contract-free — but if you accepted a device discount or a term-based promo, early cancellation fees may apply (usually the remaining discount value, not an arbitrary penalty). Check your latest bill or customer portal.
Tip: don't cancel before the new service is active. Unlike mobile, there's no 'porting' — you coordinate both dates yourself.
Pick the right timing and the right speed
Schedule the new service activation 2-3 days before your billing cycle ends. Most providers bill the full month even if you leave mid-cycle — independents (oxio, Ebox, TekSavvy) are often more flexible with prorated billing.
Don't pay for speed you don't need: 100 Mbps covers 3-4 people streaming in HD. 1 Gbps only makes sense for heavy downloads or very connected households.
Equipment: return or buy?
Rented equipment must be returned within 15-30 days — ask for a prepaid return label and keep the shipping receipt. Non-return fees of $150-300 are billed automatically otherwise.
With independents, the modem is often included (oxio) or sold once (~$100-150) — do the math: at $10-15/month rental, buying pays off within a year.
Promo pricing traps
A '$55/mo' plan that becomes $80 after 12 or 24 months costs more than a stable $65 price over two years. Always compare the 24-month cost, not the sticker price — our comparator shows both.
